Pittsburgh airport

I flew through Pittsburgh, PA’s airport last Tuesday. It’s a beautiful, well-appointed, modern airport. And empty.

Check out the monitors during likely travel time (4 PM):

Watching the election

I view all the polls and election results by consulting this site. I also have a status bar indicator of the current electoral vote for firefox. I trust the tally from renouned computer scientist, Andrew S. Tanenbaum, who runs the site and puts together the polls into a nice map.

Here’s the Tanenbaum image (live, changes without my help):

Here’s a hardcore republican image (also live):

US Citizenship: Audio CD

I lost access to the audio CD I was given at the fingerprinting and ID stage of my US naturalization. At this appointment, upon leaving, I was given a Booklet and Audio CD (Both titled: “Learn About the United States: Quick Civics Lessons”). Strangely enough, I could not find the Audio CD anywhere online (except one Russian site ILLEGALLY selling the MP3s). On closer examination of the CD, when I finally got it back, I realized that the CD was not, in fact, copyrighted (this should have been obvious, I know, as it was a government publication), so I am enclosing a link to the torrent (2 mp3 files):

  • Quick Civics Lessons: Audio CD torrent (removed December 12, 2008…. Hope everyone got it)

A Cautionary Note:

Anyone applying (submitting form N-400) for US Citizenship on or after October 1, 2008 will have to take a DIFFERENT test (i.e., this audio CD does not cover enough). The new test, based on a quick perusal of the questions, is significantly tougher. After Oct 1, 2008, anyone TAKING the test can opt for either test.

Ubuntu install error

I’ve found a number of references to the obscure error on the web:

Failure trying to run: chroot /target mount -t proc proc /proc

After careful diagnosis, I have come to the conclusion that this error has three causes (at least for me):

  1. A bad CD drive. [replace it]
  2. Bad CD-media or a badly written CD. [slow down the write, or change media]
  3. CD drive incorrectly connected (Cable Select, Master, Slave: incorrectly set) [check that cable and setting match, and that you have at least 1 Master connected, with the drive either set to CS or Master on a proper cable]

I hope posting this helps other people, as this problem took quite a while to diagnose, and much hair-pulling was involved. In my case, it was a “gradually” degrading CD drive (1), although I’ve also experienced (2).

Oi! I’m British

I got a call yesterday from the British Consulate in Denver, asking when I wanted to come in and swear my oath. I went in today at lunch. It’s official. Yes that’s Kevin Lynch, the consul himself.

My buddy Chad took me Rally Cross driving (flat course marked by cones, on dirt, timed runs) in Fountain this weekend. Click on a picture to get to the gallery.
